AUSTRALIAN ironman great Ky Hurst may be dumped by Surf
Life Saving Australia for following his Olympic dream.
The four-times
national ironman champion has been issued with a letter from SLSA calling for
him to clarify his involvement in surf lifesaving this season or be axed from
the 30-man high performance squad.
Hurst, who in 1998 won the Australian
open ironman, Uncle Tobys super series and placed second in world open 5km
swimming championship, has been given 14 days to respond.
"I was quite
shocked to receive the letter saying they would withdraw my position on the high
performance squad without my consent," said Hurst.
Hurst missed the high
performance camp on the Sunshine Coast in September due to injury and believes
this could have led to his pending dismissal despite supplying an exemption
letter from a physiotherapist.
"I had injured my back playing golf and
was out of training for a couple of weeks," said Hurst.
"I missed the
camp but I had done the injury before that and had supplied a written letter
from my physio.
"I will definitely be going to other camps, being part of
Australian teams is what I really want to be a part of."
SLSA high
performance manager Tracey Johnstone said the letter to Hurst was simply seeking
clarification of his season pursuits after she had heard reports which claimed
Hurst was only swimming this season.
Johnstone believes if Hurst is
swimming fulltime then his position on the squad should be taken by a developing
athlete, while Australian team captain Clint Robinson is able to concentrate on
kayaking and still remain in the squad.
"I am just seeking clarification
from Ky and suggest he should give up his position in the squad to a young
development athlete," said Johnstone.
"It is my understanding at this
time he is only focusing on swimming.
"It is in his hands to what he
wants to do."
