Gold Coast connection to top NRL teams By: Laura Clements

Queensland’s Gold Coast could soon be known as the rugby league capital of Australia as a result of a special link between this season’s top national teams and a local business.
It seems more than co-incidental that three of the top six teams in this year’s National Rugby League (NRL) competition use nutritional supplements provided by Gold Coast company, Body Science (BSc).
The company, which has been based in Broadbeach since its inception two years ago, is the official supplement supplier for the NRL’s Canberra Raiders, Bulldogs and last year’s Premiers, Sydney Roosters.
Indeed, just after signing up with BSc last year, the Roosters almost miraculously ended a losing streak, instead winning every game remaining in the season, including the grand final.
Not surprisingly given the Roosters’ success, a number of other NRL teams knocked on the door of BSc co-founder Greg Young during the pre-season.
“After the Roosters’ amazing turnaround, we were inundated with requests for support,” Mr Young said.
“For a relatively small Australian business that has been operating just over two years, this was quite a coup.
“However, a significant portion of our budget goes into research and development (we have three university studies currently underway), so we know our products work – the Roosters showed the NRL fraternity first hand that this was the case.”
Supplementing their diets and gruelling training programs with the Body Science range of products, from protein shakes to recovery formulations to fat burners, the Roosters, Bulldogs and Raiders have all made it to this season’s finals.
Unfortunately, the Raiders were knocked out last weekend when they lost to the Warriors by just one point. However, the Raiders are arguably the most improved team this season, going from the bottom half of the 2002 ladder to fourth place this year.
With two of the remaining NRL Premiership prospects sponsored by BSc, the Gold Coast company could not be more pleased - although it is faced with a dilemma this weekend.
“The Roosters are playing the Bulldogs at Aussie Stadium so it’s a bit difficult to know who to barrack for,” Mr Young said.
“We’ll probably just have to change the colours we’re wearing at half-time.
“They are both great teams and we’re proud to be associated with them.”
Whichever way the game goes, or indeed how the season ends, the clear winner is this Gold Coast company and the many athletes who benefit from its support.
Body Science is an active supporter of a number of Australian athletes and teams, including Ironman Ky Hurst, new world amateur kickboxing champion (61-63.5kg) Melissa Godfrey, professional surfer Trudy Todd and the Gold Coast Breakers – all Gold Coast residents.
More than 250 athletes in a range of sports from triathlon to eco-adventure make up the Body Science R&D Team. Body Science is a wholly Australian-owned and operated company. Further information is available online at www.bodyscience.com.au
