Utah Half Ironman - Provo, Utah 1.9km/90km/21km By: Nathan Gloag

01-06-2003 |
BSc triathletes Matt Clark and Craig Alexander ventured from their training base in San Diego to compete in the Utah Half Ironman on the weekend.
The race situated at an altitude of 4500feet was going to be a real test for all competitors, especially those unaccustomed to training and racing at such an altitude. Race day dawned, with very hot conditions encompassing the competitors, maxing out at 35 degrees throughout the run.
Very choppy and dangerous conditions greeted the pro athletes as they commenced the swim leg. So dangerous in fact, that the race directors decided to cancel the swim for the age group athletes.
Despite the rough and choppy conditions BSc’s Matt Clark led the pro field out of the water with some 20sec gap back to last years winner Tony Deboom. Having already established himself as a “Half Ironman” specialist winning back to back Australian Long Course Championships, Alexander exit the swim 50sec down.
Clark quickly gained company from Alexander and NZ Ironman winner Cam Brown. These three desperately tried to chase down bike phenomenon Bjorn Anderson who took the lead in the early stages of the bike leg.
Upon completion of the bike leg, Team BSc (Clark & Alexander) exited T2 together, chasing down Tony Deboom and two time Hawaiian Ironman Champion Peter Reid with a further 5mins to leader Bjorn Anderson.
On the run there was no where to hide as the heat and lack of shade took its toll on the competitors. Alexander and cam brown worked well, pacing off each other to reel in the athletes in front of them, with Clark trying to hang on 200 metres back in only his third ever Half Ironman.
Cam Brown ran a brilliant race taking victory within the final 300 metres. Alexander finishing 5th, with Clark putting in his best performance to date finishing 9th.
