The QR Queensland Reds today announced the signing of Canberra Raiders rugby league captain Clinton Schifcofske on a two-year deal.
The Queensland State of Origin winger-fullback made the decision to switch because it provided exciting new challenges and allowed him to return to his home state.
Reds head coach Eddie Jones was delighted with the news, saying Schifcofske was a key player on his hit-list to ensure a well-balanced side.
“He’s an exceptional athlete who has a great attitude, fantastic skills and excellent leadership skills,” Jones said.
“His 85% success rate at goal-kicking will also prove a valuable asset to Queensland.”
Jones is not concerned at Schifcofske’s lack of experience in rugby union.
“Clinton is a good footballer and good footballers tend to make the transition from league to union very well. Mat Rogers is a good example of this.
“He’s studious and absolutely committed and this will aid in his transition.”
Schifcofske said it was an exciting decision for him and his family.
“My wife Niomi and I are both Queenslanders. The Reds have provided us with an opportunity to return home and, equally importantly, provided me with a great challenge,” said Schifcofske.
“I have been most impressed with the Reds professionalism throughout negotiations. Coach Eddie Jones answered all of the questions that have been rattling through my head and I am confident I can be successful.”
Reds General Manager Alex Pope said the signing signalled an important step toward finalising preparations for 2007.
“The final few pieces are all falling into place and we are close to having the full picture with a talented, enthusiastic squad and the coaching staff to support them,” Pope said.
QRU Chairman Peter Lewis said Schifcofske’s reasons for signing were primarily professional and personal, not financial.
“Queensland simply had more to offer in terms of lifestyle and a professional challenge,” Lewis said.
“There were no under-the-table deals. Everything was correct and above board,” said Lewis.
