Melissa Godfrey wins in Thailand
By: Melissa Godfrey

GDAY,

Sorry it has taken a while to write to you but i found it hard to find an email that would work for me.

What a fantastic experience i have had over the past 2 weeks. From the start, i went and trained at Sangtein noi's gym, who is one of the biggest legends in thailand, he was a very famous fighter and has a lot public interest. I was lucky enough to be allowed to train at his gym. I was the first female to ever stay and train at his gym so you can imagine all his boys reactions when i turned up to train and live with them, it didn't take long for them to realise i was there to train hard and keep up with them and that is exactly what i did. I trained morning and night, 3 hours straight a training session. It was very hard and hot, and they certainly don't know the word tired, sore or bruised! No rest for the wicked and out of 12 training sessions i think i only had one really exhausted day. so all in all very good. I learnt so much and had a great time in its self just at the camp, even with the poor conditions they lived in! ( A squat toilet, no toilet paper just water to wash your bum with, no shower just a pan and cold smelly water!, just to name a few) As you can see definately an experience.

The fight itself, i fought a local thai girl who was the champion of Thailand with 27 fights under her belt, she was an acomplished amatuer boxer over there as well. My fight was only 1 of 4 girls fights that eneded up on the show, there was meant to be 13 girls fights but due to protests about women fighting it got cut to 4 with the rest men's fights. It is still such a new sport in thailand for women (5 years old) that the old school men have trouble accepting girls in the ring. So only one womens fight was to get broadcast live on telly, channels 7 ,3 and UBC. That fight was mine!!! It couldn't have worked out any better.

The fight went to plan which was great, it became my fight and i angled her around the ring with leg kicks, eventually stopping her with a right leg chop to her leg, this put her to the ground and she was unable to stand up to continue, she was stretchered out of the ring, she had a welt and bruise the size of a dinner plate on her leg that was alredy black brusied.

All in all it was a great experience that worked out like a dream, the recognition i got after from being on telly was awesome and they are keen for me to come back and fight.

After the fight we had a few days to look around, and were very lucky in going to a monks temple that looked after tigers!! Not many people know about it which was good, probably 15 peolpe there all together. We got to walk the tigers on a lead and pat them and have our photos taken with them, no cages, no bars, nothing. After 2 tigers had a fight right in front of us, one invaded the others space and it was on , showed just how scary and big they are. We also got to touch 1 week old pups that didn't even have there eyes open yet! It was unbeilevable.

Hope that fills in any questions,
Chat soon
Love melissa Godfrey
